'Mr Upton leaves for England with his wife and family in the course of the week. He is the son of Mr Upton who fortified Sebastopol. At the taking of Balaklava he remained quietly and gave himself up as a prisoner to the English. It is a purely nominal thing, as he goes about everywhere, accompanied generally by his three sweetly pretty girls. These little things, who are constantly about, dressed in round straw hats and little pink dresses, with two petdogs, put one more in mind of England and home than anything I have
seen out here. A rather amusing anecdote is told of them. They were the other day out for a walk, when a soldier, who did not know them, met them; in astonishment at seeing three prettily dressed English-looking children, he stopped and asked them who they were, when the eldest replied, with the greatest gravity, 'Please, sir, we're prisoners.' (Letter from Camp May 10)
Джон (Иван Иванович) Уптон - английский инженер на русской службе, автор проекта нескольких доков и Графской пристани в Севастополе - не сделал ноги в Англию, как утверждают некоторые отечественные источники, а умер приблизительно в январе 1854 г., то есть, задолго до вторжения союзников в Крым (The Gentleman's Magazine', January, 1855, pp 88-89). По занятии ими Балаклавы Уптон-младший, тоже инженер, отказался передать англичанам сведенья о русских укреплениях, поскольку это нарушало его обязательства перед нанимателем. Хутор Уптонов на четвертом километре Балаклавской дороге (Дом Зуавов) был захвачен и разграблен, а сам Уптон с семейством попали в плен, где немедленно затребовали компенсацию за погибшее имущество. "Дело Уптона" неоднократно упоминается в дневнике Ромейна:
"Went to Balaclava by Ld. R’s. request to see Mr. Upton & try to arrange his affair by offering him 500 & a free passage to England for himself & family. I saw him & had a talk, telling him to think it over with his wife, he says he expects employment in his profession as C.E. from Peto Brassey & Co (строительная компания, занимавшаяся, в частности, прокладкой железной дороги в Крыму. - А.). In the evening received letter, but I thought rather evasive & have written again to put the proposal on a footing so plain that there can be no dispute.
He looks to me like a man predestined to spend his life in dodging about an unwelcome visitor at the offices of great men — a small Baron de Both (ахтойта? - А.). I have tried to save him from so melancholy a fate. I told him that if he reached England with a promise of employment and 500 £ in in his pocket, he might consider that he was well out of an unpleasant position. That if he did not get immediate employment it wd. at all events secure him time to look out for it".
Дальнейшая судьба Уптонов неизвестна. Точно помню, что могила кого-то из них (предположительно, внука Уптона-старшего) сохранилась на старом городском кладбище Севастополя. Значит ли это, что они так и не уехали на историческую родину?
