Эти загадочные русские
Nov. 3rd, 2006 09:09 amУжас что творится в нашей интеллигентной сетевой конференции по Крымской войне :)
Британский коллега 1.: I picked up the odd sock that was on Ebay recently! (I have this weakness for Crimean oddities!) The seller had difficulty deciphering the first word on the attached card but when it arrived the word was clearly 'Russian' announcing the whole thing as a Russian Soldier's Sock!
For those with a similarly warped mind, the sock in question is gigantic! I surmise that (a) Russian peasant soldiers had legs like small tree trunks (b) they were designed to be filled with straw or
similar as insulation or (c) they were hoping they would get more from Father Christmas! (or more probably St Nicholas). The garment appears to be made of close woven sacking, indeed it would make a good flour sack, and has two faint circular stamps which I think are British.
Британский коллега 2.: Dear R., I may be wrong, but depending on what exact dimensions you have, it sounds like what you have is not a sock, but 'valenki', which are basically a kind of wool felt boot. What are the dimensions? How thick is this 'sock'? But valenki are not socks. Modern Russians pull a rubber thing
sort of like what we would call a 'galosh' over the bottom and use them in the snow all the time. Highly practical, as a matter of fact. Modern Russians wear socks under valenki, perhaps more than one layer...
Я вот думаю, подарить им, что ли, Настоящий Солдатский Носок для музея? Можно и флотский, типа карась. И непременно б/у, для колориту :)
